Celebrate VE Day 75 from home

Celebrate VE Day 75 from home

Everyone is being invited to participate in VE Day 75 on Friday 8th May 2020 from the safety of their own home. There are a number of ways people can take part in the celebrations:

  • The Royal British Legion has announced a programme of activities including:
    • National moments of Remembrance and thanksgiving, including a Two Minute Silence at 11am
    • A live VE Day 75 livestream at 11.15am
    • A VE Day learning pack for children aged 7-14 years
    • A UK-wide singalong to Vera Lynn's 'We'll Meet Again' at 9pm
    • An evening of memories and music in partnership with the BBC from 8pm on BBC One

Access the activities at www.rbl.org.uk/veday75 and on social media using #VEDay75 and #VEDay75Live during the livestream.

  • The BBC will have dedicated programmes across television, radio and BBC iPlayer. At the heart of the commemorations will be a special address from Her Majesty The Queen broadcast at 9pm - the exact time her father spoke to the nation three quarters of a century ago.

It will form the centrepiece of an evening event that will feature some of Britain's biggest talent including Katherine Jenkins, Adrian Lester and Beverley Knight. Presented by Sophie Raworth, the programme will culminate with the nation coming together to sing the iconic, and fitting, World War II favourite 'We'll Meet Again'.

On radio, Jeremy Vine will discuss the pivotal moments that led to the end of the war in Europe on BBC Radio 2, and BBC Radio 3's Words And Music will share fascinating diary extracts from 1945 with interludes of poetry and music themed around gratitude. On BBC Radio 4, Dr Rowan Williams on Sunday Worship will reminisce on the meaning of VE day to reflect on how our nation can rise to its present challenges, and BBC Radio 4 Extra will present an adaptation of Stephen Lowe's Touched.

BBC Local Radio will be asking the nation to come together by decorating their front windows with special bunting to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day https://www.veday75.org.

  • Northampton Borough Council has created a virtual programme of events to mark VE Day 2020.

The celebrations will be streamed throughout the day and will continue into the evening, with the town's Looking Glass Theatre Company performing a one-off, interactive VE Day Virtual Mystery Tour at 6.30pm. A Town Crier will call for peace around the world at 6:55pm, then the bells of All Saints' church will ring at 7pm, followed by a Jive Zoom Party, performed by the Step by Step Dance School at 8pm. Northampton's iconic National Lift Tower will be illuminated to the sounds of Vera Lynn's 'We Will Meet Again' at 9pm, bringing the day to a grand finale.

A full timetable of events can be found on the Mayor's Facebook page and on Northampton Borough Council's website https://www.northampton.gov.uk/news/article/3110/northampton-s-ve-day-2020-goes-virtual
