Update on the Town Council's Community Venues

Towcester Town Hall, The Sawpits Centre and Towcester Youth & Community Centre will remain closed to hirers until at least mid-September.

Whilst we understand some groups are eager to return to their regular activities, many of the groups that use our venues fall into the 'vulnerable' category, so we want to ensure we follow the latest guidelines and can comply with the onerous cleaning regimes, risk assessments, and 'track and trace' requirements to maintain safe venues for everyone including our staff.

Current guidance is contradictory: Community Centres can only open for 'essential' services, such as foodbanks, but the government has also said that some venues can reopen for health & wellbeing type activities, like yoga, but that masks should be worn indoors where people are gathering together. We also need to determine whether opening venues is financially viable due to the additional 'deep cleans' required between hirers. This may mean that we are unable to have more than one group in a venue at a time and must allow sufficient time between hirers in order to carry out additional cleaning. We are taking the time over the Summer to look into how this might impact our bookings, our caretakers (one of whom covers two venues, and the other falls into the 'vulnerable' category themselves) and the Council's finances.

The Council's first meeting after Summer recess is Monday 14th September. By then, we should have a clearer idea of the impact and any measures we need to put in place in order to reopen our venues. Obviously, we don't know what the future will hold as we enter 'flu season', so we will constantly monitor the situation.

Thank you for your understanding.
