A5 Roadworks Update 29th October 2018

Latest update from Highways England:

"Essential Maintenance: A5 High Street Towcester – Update 29.10.2018

We are currently working in Phase 3 of our essential maintenance scheme to the A5 in Towcester. Construction of a new reinforced concrete slab over the existing gas main between Richmond Road and Silverstone Brook Bridge has been completed and a length of collapsed surface water drain near Towcester Garage opposite Richmond Road has also been repaired. Installation of additional surface water drainage between The Lindens and Vernon Road is continuing.

Excavations in previously undisturbed ground are subject to a watching brief by an archaeologist and also involves a substantial amount of digging by hand. During excavation of new surface water gully connections between the Lindens and Vernon Road we have exposed sections of a drainage channel from a bygone age. The details are being recorded by the archaeologist before the channels are removed to allow laying of the new pipework. These channel sections will be offered to the Town Historian. During these excavations we have encountered a substantial number of electric and communication cables as well as gas and water mains and services. Great care is taken to first locate and then expose these mains and cables to prevent damage to them and protect our workforce from the possibility of injury or death such damage could cause. We have also encountered mass concrete in the trenches which makes dealing with mains and cables particularly difficult. Despite this, our works are still programmed to be completed by the end of November 2018.

On Thursday 1st November we are planning to resurface the carriageway between Richmond Road and The Lindens. This will be followed on Friday 2nd November by the laying of High Friction Surfacing (HFS) to areas of the newly resurfaced carriageway and the application of road markings to replace those removed during the surfacing works. We will also be cutting and installing expansion and contraction joints and traffic signal loops in the carriageway. Preparations will then be made to re-open the road by 8am on the morning of Saturday 3rd November 2018. Access to properties from Richmond Road up to and including The Lindens will then be available from the north.

Highway drainage works will continue to Phase 3 in the closed off section of road between The Lindens and Vernon Road and the off-street parking permit system will remain in operation. Access to off street parking and businesses will continue whenever possible under temporary twoway traffic signal control. We will also continue to maintain vehicle access whenever possible for the parents and minders of children attending both nurseries in this length of the A5. Additional works to install new cast iron bollards in the footpath between 63 and 71 Watling Street will also be carried out to prevent vehicles parking on the footpath in future.

NB: Please note that all our planned road works may be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

Towcester is open for business as usual during these essential works and all of the public car parks are accessible so please use your local shops, bars and restaurants and ask others to do the same. I'm sure that your local business community would appreciate it.

I apologise for any disruption our works may cause. Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey.

Yours faithfully
