Ukraine Independence Day - 24th August 2025

Sunday 24th August is the 34th anniversary of Ukraine's Independence Day
This date marks the anniversary of the declaration made by the Ukrainian parliament in 1991, a crucial turning point in Ukraine's history. It signified the country's shift from being a Soviet republic to an independent nation. The Act of Independence was validated by a nationwide referendum on December 1, 1991, where nearly 90% of voters endorsed independence.
A Symbol of Struggle and Resilience
This day serves as a poignant reminder of Ukraine's ongoing quest for sovereignty and the relentless efforts to uphold its independence. Considering recent conflicts, the significance of this holiday has only deepened, with public sentiment viewing it as a powerful symbol of national unity and resilience.
Ukraine's Independence Day transcends a mere public holiday; it embodies a celebration of national identity, freedom, and the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people.
Community Support and Solidarity
In 2024, Towcester officially twinned with the town of Zhydachiv, located near the war-torn city of Lviv. Towcester has welcomed several Ukrainian families, and the community, spearheaded by the Tove Benefice, has collaborated with a former Zhydachiv resident now temporarily living locally. Together, they have organised one aid mission to Poland, and nine aid missions to Ukraine, including the delivery of 6 ambulances and circa 40 tons of medical and aid supplies, with additional efforts underway for this coming autumn.
Towcester Town Council, representing its community, stands firmly in solidarity with Ukraine, in extending a hand of friendship and support.
